Climate and Best Time to Travel

It's extremely hot on the Greek isles in the summer. The sea wind often feels more like a hairdryer than a cool breeze. It's almost impossible to do anyting but lie down in the shade. The Cyclades are moreover flooded by beach and nightclub visitors. Spring and Fall are definitely the best times to visit and be active.

Roads

There are sufficient roads to ride with ATBs. The regular roads are almost always asphalted and reasonably good, even though you always have to look out for potholes, trenches and rubble. There is no guarantee that when you're riding on asphalt that this will be the case after the next bend. So pay attention, especially when descending. Road maintenance is mostly done during the off-season, especially in May, because then the rains have stopped and there aren't yet many tourists.

Accomodation

You will find lots of privately owned rooms offered on the Greek isles. The owners often are already waiting for you as you leave the ferry, sometimes with pictures of their rooms. Sometimes it's wise to accept an offer, at other times it's better to go look for your self. The rooms we got from people at the ferry landing were all good and the prices very reasonable. But take notice where the room is: sometimes they are far from the town center.

Money

Compare car rent

If you know in advance which places you're going to visit, you can find out online if and where there are ATM's where you can use your MasterCard and Cirrus or Visa to withdraw money.

Ferries

Check the Greek Travel Pages for all ferry services in Greece. Keep in mind that there are often changes, so check shortly before your trip. But even so, especially the smaller ferries are not allowed to go when there is too much wind.

Plan your trip to Greece online

Through online reservation systems like À la Carte Vacations you can book airline tickets, hotels, rental cars and holiday houses. You can build a fly-drive itinerary with maximum flexibility, book a flight plus a hotel hotel for a night or weekend. Without the limitations of package deals from travel organisations and most times for a much better price.
