If you know in advance which places you're going to visit, you can find out online if and where there are ATM's where you can use your MasterCard and Cirrus or Visa to withdraw money.

Language

In both countries you will be able to manage with English and German, if you don't stray off the beaten path too much.

Price level

The average income in Slovenia is a little below that of Portugal and Greece. The price level is oddly incongruous with that fact. Around 90 percent of Austrian prices are normal, not because that is appropriate, but because the country identifies with Austria. Expect to pay 30-50 euro for a double room.

Pay attention: Even if you explicitly ask for the price of a double room, Slovenians have the unpleasant habit of giving the price per person. That is confusing, because half of the price sound a lot more realistic than what they in fact charge.

The price level in Hungary is much lower: 10-15 euro per night for a room in a private Bed & Breakfast.

The same difference exists for food. A modest meal in Slovenia will cost you around 15 euro per person. In Hungary a three-course dinner, including drinks, coffee and tip, will set you back about 5 euros.
